Exhaust Repair

At TVS, we repair exhaust systems section by section, so a blowing joint or a holed silencer does not mean paying for a full new system. We find exactly where the exhaust has failed and replace only the parts that need it, on most makes and models.

• Louder exhaust noise, especially when accelerating. A hole, crack or blowing joint letting gas out early.

• Blowing or ticking from under the bonnet. A leak at the manifold or the front pipe.

• Rattling from under the car. A loose heat shield or a broken mounting.

• Exhaust hanging lower than usual. A rubber hanger or bracket has gone.

• A smell of exhaust fumes inside the car. Gas escaping before it reaches the tailpipe.

Back boxes and silencers rust through, flexi pipes crack and start to blow, and the joints between sections leak. Rubber hangers perish and let the system drop. A rattle underneath is usually a heat shield with corroded fixings, though it can also be a catalytic converter breaking up inside. Each of these is normally a repair on its own.

Exhaust gas carries water. When the system is cold, that water condenses inside the pipes and silencers. On a longer drive the exhaust gets hot enough for it to evaporate, but a car used mainly for short journeys never reaches that point, so the water sits inside and corrodes the back box from within. Road salt and spray work on the outside at the same time.

A blowing back box does not mean the rest of the exhaust has failed. We check every joint, hanger and section on the ramp and replace only what has gone. If the front sections are close behind, we tell you before any work starts so you can decide whether to do it all at once.
