How to change the oil in a car: step-by-step

If you want to do this yourself, it's entirely achievable on most cars with basic tools. Below is the kind of sequence a professional workshop follows adapted for someone doing it on a driveway for the first time.

What you'll need before you start

  • Correct oil grade and quantity (check your handbook or enter your reg on the manufacturer's site)

  • Correct replacement filter (match by vehicle, not by size)

  • Drain pan minimum 6-litre capacity

  • Socket set and the correct sump plug socket size (usually 13mm–19mm)

  • Oil filter removal wrench (strap or cup type depending on filter position)

  • New sump plug washer (aluminium or copper often vehicle-specific)

  • Funnel, rags, and nitrile gloves

  • Jack stands if the car needs lifting (never work under a car on a jack alone)

  • Torque wrench not optional, not overkill

Step-by-step procedure

  1. Warm the engine for 3–5 minutes: then switch off. Warm oil drains better. But don't do this on a fully hot engine — hot oil burns skin badly.

  2. Raise the vehicle safely: if needed. Ramps are more stable than a jack for this job.

  8. Refit the sump plug to the correct torque. Check your vehicle's spec — typically 25–35 Nm for most passenger cars. Tight by feel is not a torque setting.

  9. Move the drain pan under the oil filter. Filters hold 200–400ml of oil it will spill when you remove it.

  10. Remove the old filter: with a filter wrench. Check the old filter's O-ring came off with it they sometimes stick to the engine block, and fitting a new filter on top of an old O-ring causes an immediate oil leak.

  11. Lightly coat the new filter's O-ring with fresh oil. Hand-tighten only about three-quarter turn after the O-ring makes contact.

  12. Fill with the correct oil pour slowly, check the dipstick after each litre. Overfilling is almost as harmful as running low.

  13. Refit the filler cap. Start the engine and watch for the oil pressure light to go out usually within 5–10 seconds. If it stays on, stop immediately.

Motorcycles and trucks: where things get different

How to change oil on a motorcycle

Most motorcycles with a manual gearbox use what's called a wet clutch the clutch plates run in the same oil as the engine. Car oil contains friction modifiers that are specifically designed to make surfaces slip against each other. Put car oil in a wet-clutch motorcycle and the clutch will slip. Every gear change feels vague. Eventually the plates wear out prematurely.

You need oil rated for motorcycle use look for JASO MA or JASO MA2 on the label. If a van is doing motorway miles with a full load every day, treating the interval as a suggestion rather than a maximum is a reasonable policy. Some fleet operators use oil analysis sending a small sample to a lab to determine exactly when an oil change is needed rather than guessing by mileage.

Stage three severely neglected: Sludge formation.
