Signs your brakes need attention
Most brake faults show up as a noise, a change in the pedal or a change in how the car or van stops. The common signs are:
Squeaking or squealing. Usually the pad wear indicator is touching the disc.
Grinding when you brake. The pads are worn through to the backing plate. Stop driving the vehicle.
Juddering through the pedal or steering wheel. Uneven pad deposits on the disc face, often called warped discs.
A soft, spongy or long pedal. Air or moisture in the fluid, a leak or a failing master cylinder
Pulling to one side when braking. Usually a sticking caliper or slider pin
Braking less effectively than it used to. Worn pads, contaminated discs or old fluid
A brake warning light on the dashboard. Low fluid, worn pads or an ABS fault
